Vionic® Shoes for Overpronation

If you have established that you indeed overpronate, it is important to get the right support footwear or orthotics to help correct the condition to prevent other issues and pain in your feet.

Vionic shoe for Overpronation offers what you need most: stability and shock-absorbing cushioning.

Overpronation and How it Affects You

Overpronation is basically when your feet roll inward excessively when you we’re or run, causing the arch of the foot to collapse excessively downward or inward.

It is also called Flatfoot or Pes Planus by doctors, and most individuals that overpronate tend to have a very low or completely collapsed arch.

The way your feet strike the ground when you walk or run will affect the rest of your body and can increase your risk for certain injuries and foot deformities,

  • Pronation and Overpronation – Pronation refers to how your feet move from side to side rolling inward and outward when you walk or run, in a natural and controlled movement. When you overpronate, they roll too far inward towards the arches; when you overpronate, they roll too far outward. Pronation also occurs when you stand. Overpronation can lead to or be caused by flat and collapsed arches that lack the support needed for the proper function of your feet.
  • Causes – There are two main causes for overpronation: flexible and flat arches. Inflammation in the tendons in the arches or plantar fascia, obesity, and injuries can lead to flat feet or improper foot mechanics that can cause overpronation. Conditions such as arthritis and nerve issues may also affect your feet, leading to overpronation. In turn, being overweight can lead to fallen arches, which can cause overpronation.
  • Treatments – Keeping your arches strong and doing exercises that strengthen them and the muscles around them will help with their function and improve overpronation, To prevent arch collapse, you need to manage your weight appropriately as this is one of the biggest cause, You can use an orthotic insole to correct Overpronation, and also get supportive shoes. For pain associated with Overpronation, Anti-Inflammatory medication and pain medication may be prescribed.
  • Footwear – Two basic shoe types are usually prescribed for Overpronation. They are Stability and Motion Control shoes, usually found more in athletic shoes. However, we will discuss these shoe types and their features further in the shoe choice section.

Shoes for Overpronation

Stability shoes work best for overpronation. However, for very severe overpronation, you will need Motion Control shoes.

For the sake of regular Overpronation, we will have a look at the features of stability shoes and how they help;

  • Cushioning – Cushioning is needed, but in the right places when you overpronate. The cushioning should be less plush, more springy, and firm to return energy to the feet. EVA foam and foam midsole and insole are ideal.
  • Stability Sole – The sole of a shoe for Overpronation will be more rigid and only flex in the ball of the foot areas. This is, in turn, what provides stability, keeping your feet in a more stable and controlled position.
  • Firmer Arch Support – Most people who overpronate have collapsed arches, overpronation itself causes the arch to collapse when your feet roll inward. Thus, good arch support in the firmer midsole helps align your feet and arches for proper support.
  • Reinforced Heel Counter – Most stability shoes have a reinforced heel counter or heel collar that holds the heel in place to prevent movement and reduce slippage for enhanced stability.
