What is the Loafer

The Loafer is ideally a shoe that you can easily slip on and off your feet, and that has no laces that you need to tie. Loafers and moccasins have very similar styles and origins.

They firstly started it out as an indoor shoe only, but have matured it to be a shoe that can be worn indoors and and outdoors for a wide range of occasions. They are usually casual shoes that are worn for relaxation and loafing around basically.

Loafers come in many styles and designs from which you can choose. There are different types of loafers. So below I have tried to explain a few of the available different types.

  • Penny Loafers – You have most likely already heard of the penny loafer. Now, the penny loafer is a classic style, formal loafer that has a leather straps on top, with a diamond-shaped opening. It is called the Penny Loafer because in the 1940s and the 1950s, prep students would use to place a penny in the diamond-shaped opening of the shoe strap.
  • Horse-bit Loafers – The Horse-bit Loafer has a golden strap that runs across the top of the shoe. It is a loaf that became popular in the mid-20th century. That was usually worn by businessmen and businesswomen. It is a formal-styled and very sophisticated loafer.
  • Slipper Loafers – You also get loafer style slippers, which are incredibly comfortable if you have Plantar Fasciitis at home and relax in. The only difference between most slippers and loafers slippers is that loafers slippers have a closed back.
  • Tassel Loafers – The tassel loafer is a more casual, comfortable style that is also acceptable on most occasions. The Tassel loafer is a leather loafer that has tassels at the top of the shoe for decoration.
  • Boat Shoe Loafers – We all know the general boat shoe stunt, but did you know that this is also a form of loafer? As it is a slip-on style, it is also known as the loafer.
  • Sport Style Loafers – I have added the sports style or athletic loafers as part of my article. Ideally, it’s not an actual loafer. However, you do get some slip-on sports and athletic-style shoes that are similar to loafers, and that is extremely comfortable and supportive, especially for Plantar Fasciitis. The sports Loafer has a slip-on loafer style but will consist of materials such as mesh, and textile materials rather than leather. They are more sporty in style and do offer more features for comfort and support, for running, walking and other sports.
