How Diabetes Affects Your Feet

People with diabetes may experience problems with their feet as well as nerve damage in their feet. At least 50% of all patients with Diabetes do suffer from some form of nerve damage, that could lead to more permanent damage.

  • Mononeuropathy – Mononeuropathy is a less severe and common type of neuropathy that is more foal. High blood sugar levels can eventually damage nerves in the body which can cause nerve damage. Mononeuropathy however only affects one single nerve in the body and can appear suddenly causing very severe pain. It will not cause any long terms issues though and fade away on its own, taking a few weeks to a few months.
  • Peripheral Neuropathy – Peripheral Neuropathy is much more severe and, in most cases, when affecting your feet, it stems from Diabetes. Peripheral Neuropathy is caused by nerve damage affecting the hands, feet, and legs, in more than one nerve. It can cause sharp pain and cramps, and in more severe cases numbness, especially in the hands and feet which can lose all feeling. This can be very dangerous in terms of injuries and feeling hot or cold.
  • Issues with Circulation – In addition to nerve damage, Diabetes will also affect your circulation as it can damage arteries, veins, and capillaries in the body, especially in the legs and feet. Low blood flow in the feet can cause them to become starved for oxygen and later lead to very severe pain. Because if poor blood circulation, healing takes longer and your feet may form ulcers which can ultimately cause infection of the blood.
  • Infections – People with diabetes do have a significantly higher risk of developing an infection because of ulcers, irritation, or injury to the feet, People who have numb feet may not feel an injury or even friction, and because of poor blood circulation healing is very slow, and infection occurs much more easily.
  • Gangrene – With the combination of poor blood circulation, and numbness from Peripheral neuropathy and injury or ulcer, and easily turn to gangrene as the result of infection. Gangrene us tissue death around a sore or ulcer that can be life-threatening or cause you to lose a limb. If an area of your feet or legs becomes purple or green, or black, and have severe pain, or a foul smell, you may have gangrene.
  • Charcot’s Foot – A very rare complication associated with Diabetes is called Charcot’s Foot which also occurs as a result of nerve damage. Because you may have no feeling in your feet or toes they could easily shift and break changing their shape.
